Babies and Children only safe in the sun - the facts about UV protection!
- Children and infants run a much higher risk in the sun than we do as adults.
- Any kind of sunburn on the skin of a small baby or child adds significant damage!
- Depending on the skin type of the child and the intensity of the UV radiation, it is only from 5 to 40 minutes in the sun sufficient to sustain a sunburn that permanently damages the child's skin.
- UV damage to the skin that has been sustained can be a cause of skin cancer over time. "Our skin does not forget anything"
- As humans, we absorb around 50% to 75% of the total UV dose that we are exposed to in our lives for our 18th year.
- It is therefore very important that we protect our children well and in good time.
- After all, we ourselves are responsible for our children!
How do you recognize the correct protection for your child?
As with sunscreen, the protective effect for clothing is indicated by "ultraviolet protection factor (USF)" or specified in English as UPF. The established protective factors indicate the extension in maximum unprotected length of stay in the direct afternoon sun. This always depends on the skin type of the child.
Dermatologists recommend a protection factor of at least 30 or more!
USF values after the Australian and New Zealand or European standard can be much lower in practice because it is only determined on new textiles. Articles with the UV-Standard 801 seal, on the other hand, have been tested in such a way that circumstances such as the clothing's dampness, wear and tear due to use, and, for example, loss of shape. UV-Standard 801 therefore indicates an absolutely reliable UV protection (UPF) value. For more info: www.uvstandard801.com.
Please note: Our UV-protected hats are not chemically treated, as can be the case with other UV-protection hats. It is the very dense weave of the fabric that ensures that the carcinogenic UV radiation cannot penetrate the fabric. The UV hats are all UV standard 801 certified.
For meaningful UV protection, dermatologists recommend that your child's and baby's clothing is covered with as much skin as possible.
- Shirst, rompers and shirts with long sleeves together with a large sun cap are better than a shirt with short sleeves and a baseball cap.
- For baby caps and children's caps, the bigger the better.
The most important protective measure that you can take for your child is that you use the sun wisely. Less is more!
- Start very carefully - NEVER in the sun between 11 AM and 3 PM!
- No direct sunlight for babies younger than 1 year, small children only with adequate high protection through clothing (preferably natural textiles).
- View the UV forecasts (for example with weather reports). The higher the UV Index (UVI), the greater the risk of sunburn!
- Always pay attention to the UV protection recommendations for the individual skin type of the child!
Skin type 1: Very light skin + red-blond hair
Often summery freckles.
UVI:
0-1 = up to 1 hour
2-4 = up to 30 minutes
5-7 = up to 20 minutes
> 8 = shorter than 5 minutes
Skin type 2: Light skin + blond hair
Sometimes summer freckles.
UVI:
0-1 = no statement
2-4 = up to 40 minutes
5-7 = up to 25 minutes
> 8 = shorter than 20 minutes
Skin type 3: Light dark skin + dark blond or brown hair.

No summer freckles.
UVI:
0-1 = no statement
2-4 = up to 85 minutes
5-7 = up to 45 minutes
> 8 = less than 40 minutes
= protection recommended (2-4)
= protection required (5-7)
= protection is imperative (> 8)
